In the rich history of Indian classical music, Ustad (“Maestro”) Shafaat  Khan has distinguished himself by being the first known artist to have attained simultaneous excellence in performing the Sitar, Surbahar, & Tabla.

Heir to a musical tradition that spans several generations to the courts of the Moghuls, he began his musical training under his father, Ustad Imrat Khan the greatest Surbahar player of our times, who with his brother Ustad Vilayat Khan were the doyens of the “gayaki” or voice-like style of Sitar and Surbahar instrumental music.  Debuting at the age of 11 in the King’s Lynn Festival opened by the Queen Mother, he has since been acclaimed for countless performances at prestigious concert halls and music festivals around the world.

Recently he released three historic CDs produced by Dr. Deepak Chopra, in which he performed on the sitar/surbahar, and accompanied himself on the tabla, a first in Indian classical music.  Shafaat Khan also appears in the  IMAX feature film, "Pulse: a STOMP Odyssey" that has played at theaters worldwide.  He has also performed on stage with major artistes outside the Indian classical tradition, most recently with Stevie Wonder at the Bonnaroo Music Festival in 2010.

Besides his musical performances on sitar and tabla, he has conducted residency programs, lectures, and workshops for Colleges and Universities. Please visit his website at for more information.
