Pangolin Rescue Center Uganda

Welcome to the Pangolin Rescue Center Uganda.

A program of Kigezi Natural Conservation and Development

About us/ our activities:

Kigezi Natural Conservationa and Development is a community-based organization (CBO) implementing wildlife and nature conservation projects  in communities next to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Queen Elizabeth National Park. We are  registered with the government of Uganda as a CBO and have been in operation for over 10 years. Our founder is Arineitwe Moses.

We started by making awareness  in communities  and have been able to reform poachers from poaching to agriculture.

Our team includes former rangers and community guides, and all local conservationists .

We have 3 groups of reformed poachers. Two are near Bwindi impenetrable national park and one is near Queen Elizabeth national park .

Through awareness, we have been  able to set up a network that helps us to know  where there are cases of poaching and we have been able to rescue some wildlife  from poachers and traffickers  .

We have so far been able to rescue 178 pangolins, which have been released  back into the forest of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. We work hand in hand with Uganda wildlife rangers  especially the wildlife intelligence department,  and he research and  monitoring  department.

We have also been able to rescue  a vervet monkey from eastern Congo DRC, that was being kept as a pet. We handed him to UWA and the animal was released in Queen Elizabeth national park .

We have also been able to rescue a number of  monitor lizards , giant rats and a number of bird species from locals who wanted to kill them for bush meat.

In an effort to  create alternatives to poaching for community members, we have been able to set up  the following projects

  • Fish farming
  • Bee keeping
  • Vegetable farming
  • Mushrooms faraming
  • Indigenous  tree planting
  • Basic tourist camping  facility at the pangolin rescue center
  • Basic restaurant at our pangolin rescue center
  • We have taught some reformed poachers how to make bee hives. A bee hive construction project is on going .

Our challenges:

Most of our funding is from donations from wildlife and nature lovers from around the world. This income is not steady and thus often poses challenges when we have little to no funds but are doing our best.

Our challenges include:

  • Lack of transport means for our pangolin and other wildlife rescue operations .
  • Lack of veterinary services for the rescued wildlife
  • Lack of proper recue kits
  • Enclosure maintenance
  • Lack of Staff up keep
  • Pangolin clinic as at times they are rescued while injured .
  • Lack of funding to support the reformed poachers program running
  • Lack of carpentry tools and materials for the reformed poachers  bee hives construction project.

Your donation makes a big difference!

With your support, we can continue our Pangolin Rescue Center-Uganda. We can also continue and further expand our programs to reform poachers and provide community members with alternative income-generating activities. Together we can strengthen our community network and save more pangolins and other wildlife!

At Queen Elizabeth National Park, we hope to create a bee hives fence (with bee hives made by reformed poachers) to stop elephants and other game animals from raiding crops.

Thank you very much for any support you can provide.
